Nazi propaganda films

In the 21st century, should Nazi propaganda films still be banned? Why or why not?

The picture above is of Adolf Hitler with an actress he revered in the film industry Leni Riefenstahl. During the war Adolf Hitler had the regime sponsor numerous films in order to influence the general population on his war efforts. He monitored films at the time that blatantly represented anti Nazi war efforts. In an article by Paul Byrnes called, Lift the ban on Nazi propaganda films to defuse their power, he says almost 300 movies were removed from general circulation when the new regime came in after Hitler. He continues to discuss how almost 40 films are considered, "verboten" or forbidden films and still removed from general circulation. The title of his article says it all, but aside from letting the Nazi regime still hold power of Germans modern society, censorship of films diminishes the potential upside of knowledge gained from understanding what was going on at the time. In a society that was under such tyranny so much can be learned. While some filmmakers of the time were under oppression of the Nazi regime, others used this time to reinforce anti Nazi propaganda through film. Fritz Lang had an interesting impact on the time. He represented a large portion of the film industry during the the time of Nazi Germany. While his films would get banned by this regime, he was still asked by Joseph Goebbels' to take hold of the new film industry that Nazi Germany had control over. In order to preserve history and move past this live, die repeat pattern it is imperative that films are not banned still.
